  1. I spend the night waiting for you
  2. waiting for your promised arrival
  3. staring out the window
  4. staring into the cold darkness
  5. every movement looks as if it was you
  6. every shadow looks as if it was cast by you
  7. but it never is
  8. and all I can do is wait
  9. I listen for your footsteps
  10. listening over the howl of the wind
  11. every creak sounds like your step
  12. every sound seems like it is your voice
  13. but it never is
  14. and all I can do is wait
  15. The clock chimes again
  16. I have long since stopped counting the hours
  17. for what can time mean to me
  18. every minute I wait is an hour
  19. every hour I wait is a year
  20. and it all amounts to an eternity
  21. an eternity of waiting for you to come
  22. an eternity of waiting for you to keep your promise
  23. I begin to wander this house
  24. forcing myself away from the window
  25. in every room I think I see you
  26. see your shadow as you walk away
  27. and I will run in
  28. my heart quickening with the thought of seeing you
  29. but it never is you
  30. and all I can do is wait
  31. I find myself walking by a mirror
  32. and in it I think I see you
  33. I think you are standing behind me
  34. your beguiling smile making my heart melt
  35. and if I let myself go I can almost hear you breathing
  36. I can almost believe you are there
  37. I close my eyes and expect your arms to embrace me
  38. but they never do
  39. and when I open my eyes
  40. all I see is myself
  41. and suddenly the mirror is too cold for me to look at
  42. So I turn back to the window
  43. staring out into the darkness
  44. watching for your promised coming
  45. listening for your soft footsteps
