I spend the night waiting for you
waiting for your promised arrival
staring out the window
staring into the cold darkness
every movement looks as if it was you
every shadow looks as if it was cast by you
but it never is
and all I can do is wait
I listen for your footsteps
listening over the howl of the wind
every creak sounds like your step
every sound seems like it is your voice
but it never is
and all I can do is wait
The clock chimes again
I have long since stopped counting the hours
for what can time mean to me
every minute I wait is an hour
every hour I wait is a year
and it all amounts to an eternity
an eternity of waiting for you to come
an eternity of waiting for you to keep your promise
I begin to wander this house
forcing myself away from the window
in every room I think I see you
see your shadow as you walk away
and I will run in
my heart quickening with the thought of seeing you
but it never is you
and all I can do is wait
I find myself walking by a mirror
and in it I think I see you
I think you are standing behind me
your beguiling smile making my heart melt
and if I let myself go I can almost hear you breathing
I can almost believe you are there
I close my eyes and expect your arms to embrace me
but they never do
and when I open my eyes
all I see is myself
and suddenly the mirror is too cold for me to look at
So I turn back to the window
staring out into the darkness
watching for your promised coming
listening for your soft footsteps
refusing to believe that you will never come
